The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), in collaboration with the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), the Department of Environment (DoE), the Institute of Public Health (IPH), the Directorate General of Food, and other relevant stakeholders, has taken the initiative to develop these guidelines to establish the safety assessment procedures for foods derived from GE plants, also taking into consideration the international Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants1. As the apex body for the National Agricultural Research System BARC has much of the expertise necessary for both the development and safety assessment of agricultural products of biotechnology. These guidelines are not intended to describe the GE food regulatory institutions, administrative or decision-making procedures within Bangladesh’s regulatory framework, but only to provide technical guidance on the safety assessment process for whole foods, food products, and foods used as ingredients, that are derived from GE plant sources. This document is intended to provide guidance to both applicants and reviewers for regulatory purposes.
